Sue’s Indian Wells 2017 Fan Story

Hey Guys,

Here is my 2017 report from Indian Wells. I say it every year but the tennis garden is truly a beautiful place. We left snow, rain and damp cold behind to enjoy brilliant sunshine, blue skies and heat. Can I complain about the heat?

It was hot! But at night, shorts and a t-shirt was all that was required.

We stayed in a lovely little inn with our own private patio, full kitchen and NO creepy owner. What a relief to know I wasn't going to be murdered, chopped up and put in the freezer during my stay.

On to the matches! What can I say. Stomach in my throat again as I watch Roger enter the stadium to the roar of the crowd. He floated in, played for 51 minutes, had an on court interview, hit signed tennis balls into the screaming crowd and floated out. A two year wait for just over an hour. Totally worth it! It was the Robert match. The poor guy looked like a deer caught in the headlights.

The court is slow but the air is light. The green and black looked ok but then Fed could be wearing shorts pulled up to his armpits and we'd be happy.
Fed's dad was in the player's box with Ivan and the rest of the team. Mirka and Lynette were in Larry Ellison's box close to where I was sitting. Both looked elegant. I'm such a groupie!

Within 24 hours I saw Murray, Nadal, Djokovic and Fed. No one got the roar of the crowd like Roger. He is loved in the desert. At a Stan match, someone was yelling, we love you Roger. Stan was not impressed.

The most entertaining match was the Murray / Pospisil one. It was so exciting and that is the LOUDEST I have ever heard the fans. All Canadians I guess! Murray wasn't expecting that. Pospisil is my second favourite player.

Djokovic was in a foul mood. Trying to tear apart a tennis ball – what is that? My theory is Nole just can't get his motivation back and his anger is rising.

No offence to Americans on this blog but the American players I saw were behaving badly. Grow up already. The player I was impressed with this year was Kyle Edmund. Great serve and forehand.

A lot of renovations were done to stadium one this year. And so the prices are rising again – 38% last year and 40% for 2018. Also a grounds pass doesn't get you into stadium one anymore.

And now to the fans. Many of the usual crowd… botox, bleached blonde hair and leather skin. Hey, come to Indian Wells Tennis Garden – you can now get a face lift on site!

Off to rob a bank so I can afford tickets for next year!

Huge fan of Roger Federer - I'll pretty much try and watch all his matches from Grand Slam level right down to ATP 250. When I'm not watching or tweeting about tennis I play regularly myself and use this blog to share my thoughts on Fed and tennis in general.

    1. Nice writing Sue! We all had an amazing time last week ’cause Roger played great and won the tournament. It is always great to see Roger playing live, he is such an artist ok the court.

      #GoRoger

  1. Thanks Sue. It is always fun reading fan stories. I didn’t realize the grounds pass didn’t let you into to the stadium anymore. The improvements in the stadium were quite impressive though. It sure was nice have bathrooms and concessions near the cheap seats in the upper level. There were none before. We were both at the Pospisil-Murray match. Unfortunately, I only stayed for the first set so I missed the upset. Kids! They were tired they said. I am working on my fan story. It should be ready soon.

    1. Too bad you missed the match, Fran. Yes, so nice to have bathrooms and concessions on the upper level. They need to put water stations on stadium 2 1st level though. Stupid that one has to leave the stadium to fill up the water bottle or hot water from the bathroom tap!

A Brit came out the bathroom connected to the outside of stadium one and exclaimed…that’s the biggest one I’ve ever seen! Larry lower ticket prices and smaller bathrooms would have been better!

Looking forward to your report and photos. Mine are just from a cell.

    2. @Fran cool looking forward to reading 🙂

Just reminded me, where is Alysha’s fan story from Melbourne? Been working on the first one since 2016 Aus Open, so must be at least 10,000 words by now 😆

  2. Very nice writ, thanks Sue! A pity with high prices going up and going up. A few from the crowd seemed ok people 🙂

  3. I’m reading this at the lake side of Tōya-ko, south of Sapporo, I remember you’ve been here before, right?
Hahahahaha, great writing! Wonderful sense of humour, Sue 😆 Thanks a lot. I’d love to go IW one day!

    1. Hey Wanda, Lake Toya..are the volcanos steaming? Stunning place.

Thanks, guys! It’s fun to write a little report. Love it so much there. The guy I get the great tickets from doesn’t think he will renew next year. Most of the good seats (back to the sun) are season ticket holders. See how it goes.

And thanks Jonathan for all your effort.

  4. Great post, glad to read that you a good time watching Roger in action. Yeah visiting one tennis tournament do require one to rob a bank prior. I think I will start my building my master plan now 😀😆

  5. Thank you Sue what a great piece and really love that airborne Fed photo too…it must have been truly fabulous seeing this latest version of RF and your take on the others, the venue and even your accommodation. I really enjoyed getting such an insight into the whole IW experience!

  6. Lovely write-up Sue. Loved your Novak explanation.

Stan must have muttered ‘asshole’ under his breath when he heard someone shout Roger we love you.

That must be the reason for the Freudian slip in the speech later on

  7. Thanks, Murli. Easy to write about stuff you love. I think Roger and Stan have a complicated relationship. Poor guy, if you watch the post final press conference, most of the questions are about Fed.

  8. Hey Sue, you are not only sweet, but also really funny. I am very happy that you didn’t get chopped up and put in a freezer 🙂 And exactly how close were your seats, you look like you stood next to Roger to take that pic 🙂

Ps: Guys….. please don’t take it for granted that you have the oppertunity to see the Goat live. We don’t all have that….sigh… I tried twice and…. sigh

      1. Nope Jon, sorry, #stubbornKatyani, I have to see the Goat in my own country 🙂 Nah, kidding, I am unfortunately not the travelling type….

    1. Last year, when we got to the airbnb rental, there was a giant square beam protruding over our entrance door. It had huge chains attached. I imagined me swinging from a meat hook and being tortured to death. Not terribly welcoming and I do have a vivid imagination. Felt lucky nothing awful did happen though!

  9. Hey Katyani, I was 8 rows up from the court. I sold my soul to the devil for those seats. Early rounds guarantee Roger but not a necessarily competitive match.
Last year without Fed was depressing. I know I’m so lucky to see him play again. Like Peter Pan flying through the window, never know if it’s the last time.
I believe Wanda is going to Laver Cup. How about one of the grass tournaments?

    1. Hi Sue, sold my soul to the devil….you mean Nole 🙂

I could have seen Roger twice. The first time my seat was somewhere near the roof I guess, even if Roger was there, I could not have seen him (my seat was wayyy too far).
But the second time, when he had cancelled, seriously Sue, I had such good seats, I seriously seriously could have seen even the hairs on his legs, that’s how good my seat was 🙂 🙂

      1. Seats far away can see the hairs on his legs, lol. Too bad Katyani, hope it happens for you.
Nole, the Prince of Darkness…gives me the creeps.

    1. The Lord works in mysterious ways. He had bigger, better plans thousands of miles away for Roger. 😉

  10. Hi Sue, thanks for all the delicious details ( the cheers Roger got, Mirka and Lynette etc). I’m a groupie too, so lapped it all up eagerly.😊

  11. Thanks for writing about your experience Sue. Improvements are nice, but back to back (to back to back) 40% increases just alienate fans. Sorry to see that.

What did you mean by the bad behaviour of the US players – yelling, racquet smashing? It does seem to depend on the individual – Tiafoe in particular has seemed mature for his years. Of course that’s not limited to US players either.

Your little inn this year looks glorious!
