Federer's Best US Open Match

Roger Federer’s Best Matches at the US Open

On my last blog post I got a comment regarding the fact that American sports broadcasting companies don't really talk about Federer's achievements at Flushing Meadows.

I find that quite strange considering he's played so many great matches on Arthur Ashe, has the best ever W/L record in New York of all time and has generally entertained millions of people over the last decade.

I guess they are just bitter he owned Roddick there in 2007 and due to the fact there are no real Americans competing at the top level these days so they just have to play down his accomplishments.

There's not much I can do about that, unless ESPN give me a slot in the commentary box, but it did get me thinking about some of Roger's best matches at the US Open so I thought I'd do a little compilation of my favourite ones. These aren't necessarily matches that have had the biggest bearing on his career just the ones I have enjoyed the most. Here we go:

Federer vs. Monaco US Open 2011 4th Round

Utter destruction! He also served 4 aces in a row in this match and just made Monaco look like he had never picked up a racquet before. It's obviously not the best match in terms of tension or drama but in terms of seeing Roger gliding around and schooling an opponent who was actually in good form it's just a joy to behold.

Federer vs. Roddick US Open Quarter Final 2007

Darth Federer at his very best. This one is another of my all time favourite USO matches just because it pretty much shows what Fed is all about, Roddick plays a great match, puts in a crazy level of effort from start to finish and… loses in straight sets. Some of the shots Fed comes up with are just genius and it just shows that Prime Fed on a hard court is pretty close to unbeatable.

Federer vs. Hewitt US Open Final 2004

This one looked set to be one of the most entertaining finals possible, it was in a way, but not how people expected as Roger blew Hewitt off the court 6-0, 7-6 6-0 to win his 4th Grand Slam title.

Again it was pure domination, Hewitt came into the final in great form and hadn't lost a set all tournament yet Roger destroyed him. We all know how competitive Hewitt is and he even did well to to force a tie break in the second set coming from a break down but in the end resistance is futile against the GOAT.

Federer vs. Blake US Open Quarter Final 2006

The 2006 US Open might be Roger's best ever slam and this match against Blake was easily one of the best of the tournament with Roger showing all aspects of his game to win in 4 sets. Although Blake is an underachiever he did have a huge game which meant he and Fed were great to watch. The only decent quality highlights I could find are of the full match, check out the first set breaker where Fed saves 3 set points before taking it 9-7.

Federer vs. Djokovic US Open Semi Final 2009

Tweener, I needn't say anymore!

Federer vs. Soderling US Open 2010 Quarter Final

Another match that just epitomises Roger's ability to make high quality opponents looks bang average. This was easily Soderling's best year on tour, ranking in the top 4 for the first time and defeating Federer for the first time at the French Open. Yet here normal service was resumed and provided yet another Swiss Masterclass for the Arthur Ashe crowd.

Federer vs. Agassi US Open 2004 Quarter Final

Perhaps not the peRFect match from Roger here in terms of his level but it was always interesting to see him face off vs. Agassi. Agassi was playing some of his best tennis post 30 but once Roger began to get his act together he could never really handle him as we see here and a year later in the USO final of 2005.

Other Enjoyable Matches

  • Federer vs. Lopez US Open 4th Round 2007
  • Federer vs. Isner US Open 3rd Round 2007
  • Federer vs. Agassi US Open Final 2005
  • Federer vs. Davydenko US Open Semi Final 2006
  • Federer vs. Djokovic US Open Final 2007
  • Federer vs. Murray US Open Final 2008

Which Federer matches did you guys find most enjoyable at Flushing Meadows? Let me know in the comments.

About Jonathan

Huge fan of Roger Federer - I'll pretty much try and watch all his matches from Grand Slam level right down to ATP 250. When I'm not watching or tweeting about tennis I play regularly myself and use this blog to share my thoughts on Fed and tennis in general.

  1. Here’s to many more πŸ˜›

  2. Runner’s up!

  3. I can think of some more good ones – Djokovic in 08 semis, Andreev in 08 3rd rd, first two sets of match from Soderling in 09 quarters, santoro, hewitt and Nalbandian in 05!

  4. In that Isner match, I think he had played about 127 points without an unforced error! If only he could do that now!

  5. Congratulations on reaching my first ATP semifinal?

Anyway there was one match Jonathan forgot.

Federer vs Nadal QF 2013, Federer beats Nadal in 4 sets.

  6. Santoro was a great match, not fantastic by Rog, but some great shots from both ends…

  7. Hey Jonathan…Yep i liked this post πŸ™‚ and you are right about the american commentators they dont really acknowledge the last decade of his achievements, which if you look closely the matches, the records, the 5 in a row titles, 40 wins its simply an unbelievable !! Can you imagine if Roger was american what it would be like. The commentators like the british ones who if you took away the picture it sounded like they were having a group orgy over Murray, then times by 100 you will have the americans going insane over Federer!!!lol
Anyway regarding memerable matches your list is good, but i especially loved when Roger beat Murray very satisfying. Then the Djokovic matches have been really good even though twice Federer had it in the bag but couldnt get over the finishing line. They really hurt but heart pumping entertaining matches. Then for utter masterclass the match against Hewitt wow just blown away. Then i ask myself why couldnt it been Nadal when they had the lightest tennis balls and the hard court was much faster than today. Why why why ???? Rant over πŸ™ whats incredible is that we are spoilt for choice really. And i like @universal123 optamism regarding Fedal QF, i hope it comes true.

    • Hey man,

Yeah I don’t get why they seem to ignore Fed’s achievments. Guess it’s because he’s from a country most of them don’t even know exists lol.

And I agree the Murray final was another good one, especially after the year Fed has with Mono, FO and Wimby losses to back strong.

  8. Definitely liked Soderling ’09 a lot. Stepanek ’08, Melzer ’10, and Santoro ’05 are also up there for me.

  9. While we’re at it, let’s talk about favourite matches at other slams! πŸ˜‰

    • Haha it’s be a never ending list. So many I remember and so many I’ve forgotten off the top of my head. Some belters at Aussie Open 2009 though that was immense up until the final.

  10. I loved all his matches at USO 2008. He showed so much emotions on court, its just amazing. Plus all the matches above.

    • Hey Dippy,

Yeah 2008 was maybe his roughest year in terms of tough losses. This year has been difficult too but the losses haven’t been in finals which obviously hurt more…

      Jonathan

  11. I fully agree with your choices, yet I’d also add the quarterfinal against Nalbandian in 2005.
