Roger Federer

Merry Christmas 2013

Hey all, just a quick post to wish all the people who read / comment / contribute here in any shape or form a Merry Christmas / Fedmas from me. And for those who don't celebrate it, just a big thankyou I guess.

It was hardly a vintage year in terms of Federer's level of performance but the blog has been great fun as always with more people reading and commenting than ever before along with the live chat sessions when Fed is on court proving very addictive / popular too.

The blog has received just under half a million visits this year which is a stat I'm pretty proud of and one I wouldn't have achieved without people sharing blog posts on social networks, writing contributions, commenting and subscribing so thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

The comments have again been great to read and reply to this year, lots of debate and opinion, no real trolling / pointless arguing and most of all a strong appreciation for Roger's brand of tennis on all surfaces which is one of the main reasons I started this site.

I won't single anyone out as I'm sure there are many people who just read here and never comment whom I don't know about but I would like to pay special thanks to Sid, Jovica and Gaurav who each contributed a number of posts to the blog over the year that proved very popular and helped diversify things. And also a big thanks to Conal for creating Roger's Best Points of 2013 video which I shared here and is a great compilation and reminds us Fed is still capable of producing the type of shots that no one else can even when in a slump.

As for 2014 live chat will be back for Brisbane which begins at the start of January and I also have a few things planned for the blog throughout the year. I am toying with the idea of launching small forum for some extra discussions be it other players, equipment or your own game.

It's important I get it right though as I don't just want another mish mash of topics full of clutter and noise, it has to offer something a little different to other tennis forums out there and also compliment both blog posts and live chat rather than take over them. Or on the flip side not used by anyone at all. If anyone has ideas for what they'd like on a forum here or whether they want one at all let me know in the comments.

I will probably do another post with some predictions / draw analysis of Brisbane before the year is out as I have some free time now and I'm not a huge Christmas celebrator on the whole so have plenty of hours to kill so stay tuned ๐Ÿ™‚

Ready for 2014? Allez!

Huge fan of Roger Federer. I watch all his matches from Grand Slam level right down to ATP 250. When I'm not watching or writing about tennis I play regularly myself and have a keen interest in tactics, equipment and technicalties of the sport.

  1. … and our thanks to you, jonathan, for giving us a platform where all of this can take place. I don’t know how much background screening of clutter you have to do, but I do know that your blog is largely characterized by mutual respect, & free of name-calling. Based on what I see going on “out there”, I have to think that this takes quite a bit of effort, and I thank you.

Isn’t it neat that even though our guy is 32 – 32!! – we can still admire the isolated wonders he showed us in an overall lackluster season, and look forward to whatever may be in store for the next!

Merry Christmas and/or happy solstice to each of you; joy and fulfillment in the year ahead ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Thanks for giving us all this fantastic place to discuss and talk about the man we all love, Merry Xmas and Happy New year everyone! And that 2014 bring much glory to Roger!

  3. And the big news – a tweet from Roger:

Mirka and I are very happy to share the news that Myla & Charlene will be big sisters in 2014! Happy Holidaysโ€ฆ..

    1. Hey Rita, great news right !!! Atleast now we may know why his 2014 schedule was not out. Maybe this was the reason? Hope the new baby (or as some call him or her, the true Baby Fed) may bring them all joy and happiness and Roger some great and important titles.
One plus point. Now he will have to continue playing for years and years. Someone has to make the money that will be all spent on nanny’s right???
You see, always a silver lining…..

  4. Merry Christmas, and a Happy new year in advance, to everyone! ๐Ÿ™‚

Jonathan, 500,000 blog hits this year? That’s incredible! Congratulations!

  5. Thanks again Jonathan. So nice to be part of a blog where the people are respectful but funny. Did you see, Mirka is pregnant and due sometime in 2014! Another baby Fed.

  6. To Jonathan… HAPPY CHRISTMAS and have a HAPPY NEW YEAR and a huge big up for all the posts despite the year Federer had. I know how I feel when Roger losses so to then write a match summary and analysis about it cannot be easy.
Anyway hopefully 2014 season will be much better year. Although I expect the odd tight losses from RF as long as he preforms and goes deep in all the GS. And if it falls in place he goes and wins one major I’ll be really happy. Come on Roger!!! I believe.

  7. Merry Christmas to everyone! You all make this blog the best around, and the first one I check!
And Jonathan..thanks for facilitating the site and providing your great match analysis – pre and post matches. To Sid.. you have a wicked sense of humour..long may you continue commenting! Conal..thanks for your amazing video.. am already looking forward to the 2014 one!
And I suppose I should say thank you to Roger who is the reason for this site after all!
    So Happy New Year..

  8. Hey guys and girls, to all of you a Merry Christmas. May all your wishes come true and may you celebrate it with your loved ones. As I am typing this Rafa is beeing interviewed on CNN for the great year he had…. What to do? Anyway Jonathan, congratulations on your 500.000 visits !!! You having half a million visits and Ru-an is also celebrating a million views. Congratulations. Great times for Roger bloggers !!!
Jonathan, I hope you will have great articles to write in 2014 when Roger will win a lot.
What do you think, him beeing a father again, will that motivate him more?

  9. Oh before I forget… I have 3 (Christmas) wishes before the year ends (you know, besides peace for everyone, no more hungry children or violance towards children and women):
    1) For Roger to have no more backpain and a lot of titles hunger so he will play to win 25 GS and 10 WTF (yes, that will happen).
    2) To finally see in 2014 a Rafa vs Andy match (it has been what almost 3 years for that not to have happened).
    3) To finally get an answer to the question that has made me more worried this year than that I have been worried about Roger.

Ps: CNN’s top 10 greatest sport moments of this year… number 1 is Andy winning Wimby…..

      1. But Jonathan, seriously?? Number 1 greatest sport moment was Andy winning Wimby?? I mean, I would have thought Armstrong coming clean on Oprah, I mean, that was like the biggest moment or maybe something with football. But Andy??

I really appreciate your hardwork in mantaining this amazing blog where we can share our thoughts about federer.
Previously i used to visit bleacher report but there was just no one who really cared about federer everyone was just going nadal djokovic depressing articles for federer.
    I just love visiting here.

  19. Jonathan, what you are doing with this site is really inspiring and makes us feel good when things are going down and great when going up. Wish you and Fed fans many many happy moments for 2014!

  20. Hope you are all surviving the festive excesses! Cannot wait for Brisbane to start, am hoping Fed will be so motivated by his baby news and by the fact that his practusing has clearly been going well!
Great blog J, happy to be a part of it! Carry on the good work! Forum idea sounds good but still love the intimacy of yr size of blog but hey! 500, 000 hits! Bravo!

    1. Cheers Susie, Happy Christmas.

Yeah I don’t want the forum to damage blog posts. Want it to compliment. Maybe it can be more about playing the sport ourselves and equipment rather than the tour.

  21. I have yesterday’s (Thursday 26th) results to share from the Abu Dhabi exhibition.

    Tsonga def Murray 7-5 6-3

    Ferrer def Wawrinka 7-5 6-1

    Match Overview:

    Tsonga vs Murray:

First set went to 5-6 with serve before Tsonga got a break point and converted with a lob.
In the second set, Murray got a break early on but lost two service games in a row to fall behind and Tsonga had no trouble finishing him off. Tsonga plays Djokovic today (Friday 27th). Murray plays Wawrinka in the 5th place playoff.

    Ferrer vs Wawrinka:

In the first set Wawrinka was 5-3 up but squandered the lead to lose it 7-5. Second set was a complete non-event as Ferrer obliterated Wawrinka: 6-1.

Anyway that’s the first result of the 2014 tennis season (even though technically its still 2013).

PS: Those match reports were written by me, Jonathan watch out or I’ll be taking over your job!

  22. Better late than never, so merry christmas everyone and specially to you Jonathan. I canยดt thank you enough for this great blog with all these great commenters and users. And 500.000 views, thatยดs incredible. Looking foreward to another season in 2014, happy new year.

And now breaking news, maybe ๐Ÿ™‚

In this article on german though ROger speaks about the new racquet:

I have done a little translation of my own, not perfect but the message is clear, Roger is making a switch, at least for the tournaments in Australia:

“I have the feeling that this is the right time for a change. I’ve played 2.5 weeks with the new model and it feels good for me. We will see how it goes in the tournamnents in Australia”

This is amazing news I think and Iยดm really looking foreward to the draw at Brisbane so the season finally can kick of!!

    1. Hey Mark, thanks for the great news! Hope you had a lovely Christmas. Can’t wait to see Fed in Brisbane.
Happy New Year to you, too ๐Ÿ˜€

  23. Another breaking news from Fed on facebook:

“I am happy to announce that beginning in Melbourne, Stefan Edberg will join Severin Lรผthi on my coaching team. Severin, who has been part of my team for the last 7 years, will do most of the weeks and Stefan has agreed to work with us for at least 10 weeks starting at the Australian Open in Melbourne. Stefan was my childhood hero, and I am really looking forward to spending time and learning from him.”

Wooow the 2014 season is shaping up really really well ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. I have never been more excited about a tournament start than Brisbane, Fed in full fitness with a new racquet and Edberg and Severin on the side, what a dangerous cocktail ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. Wow. So much going on in the Fed camp. Exciting times for sure. Hopefully Roger will withdraw from tournaments when and if his back is an issue.

  25. This is like the most interesting season start ever ๐Ÿ˜€ I have never looked this much forward to season start ๐Ÿ˜€
And I love the nickname Fedberg!
