Felix Auger-Aliassime’s Racket

The Canadian recently won his first ATP title in Rotterdam, what racket does he use?

Felix Auger-Aliassime made his top 100 and top 25 debuts at the age of 18, which left many wondering if he'd be able to mirror some of the successes of the man he shares his birthday with, Roger Federer.

However, title success had to wait for the Canadian, but he finally got over the line in his tenth final, winning the ATP 500 Rotterdam in 2022 and collecting his biggest pay cheque to date.

But what tennis racket does Felix Auger-Aliassime use? Is it the same as Tony Nadal's old pupil Rafa uses? Not quite, let's take a look.

What Racket Does Auger-Aliassime Use?

Felix Auger-Aliassime is a Babolat sponsored player and endorses their flagship racket, the Babolat Pure Aero.

However, the actual model he uses is an older generation Babolat Pure Aero VS  based on the Aero Storm mould. The Pure Aero VS frame is also used by Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune albeit they use the 2020 version which is a slightly different build.

While only two characters separate them in name, the Pure Aero and Pure Aero VS are completely different rackets specification wise.

The VS has a smaller head size, thinner beam, and a more control orientated racket. You can see the difference in spec between the retail rackets below.

Auger-Aliassime's String Setup

babolat rpm rough

Auger Aliassime uses a full bed of Babolat RPM Rough in his Pure Aero VS. He uses a 1.30mm gauge and usually has a tension of 23kg on the mains and crosses.

RPM rough is a co-polymer monofilament with an octagonal shape and a special cross-linked silicone coating. It is the textured version of the string Nadal uses, RPM Blast.

This setup provides spin and control, and the 1.30mm gauge gives that added durability.

Has Auger-Aliassime Changed Rackets In His Career?

Before using the Pure Aero VS, Felix used a first-generation Babolat Pure Strike, which you can see in the picture from Wimbledon in 2016.

When Project One7 came out, he stuck with the original before switching to the Pure Aero VS.

Can You Buy Auger-Aliassime's Racket?

If you want to match Auger-Aliassime's racket purely cosmetically, you can buy the Babolat Pure Aero, which has a matching paint job. A set of yellow RPM rough, a Babolat Custom Damp and a Pro Original overgrip will complete the look.

To mirror his specification, you will need to buy the Babolat Pure Aero VS and customise it with some lead tape under the bumper guard and weight in the handle (I would recommend using putty rather than silicone as it's easier to remove.)

What do you think of Auger-Aliassime's racket? Should he start endorsing the racket he uses rather than the Pure Aero, which sells itself thanks to Nadal?

Jonathan

Huge fan of Roger Federer. I watch all his matches from Grand Slam level right down to ATP 250. When I'm not watching or writing about tennis I play regularly myself and have a keen interest in tactics, equipment and technicalties of the sport.

  1. Sorry, I didn’t get a notification for this one 🙁
And I think you probably mean “silicone” where you’ve got “silicon”?

  2. He uses an older VS than Alcarez. FAAs racquet has a flat thin beam. Alcarez uses the newer model and it has a thicker beam, totally different. FAA racquet is based on the old Pure Storm tour mold and I would venture it’s actually a Pure Aero VS Tour 11.3oz unstrung before customization.
