Federer’s Outfit for the Madrid & Rome Masters 2013

Hey all, here’s Roger Federer’s outfit for the 2013 Madrid Masters and for the Internazionali BNL d’Italia Rome Masters in the run up to the French Open.

First thoughts, wow I’m shocked. A green crew neck tshirt? Very Nadal esque and I’m instantly not a fan of this one. What has Roger done to deserve this one? I know he hasn’t played great since the Australian Open but surely it’s too soon for Nike to be treating him like Adidas treat Murray? 😛

To me it just doesn’t look that nice and looks more like something he’d wear in practice, not an outfit for a serious match. I don’t particularly like the colour green when it’s used as the primary colour of a t-shirt like it is here either. I don’t mind it as a detail colour such as when it’s used for the Nike tick or RF logo but the whole thing? Nahhh.

In summary:

  • Awful colour
  • Looks more like a football training top with the mesh like front
  • Crew neck just can’t compete with a polo

The only hope is that it looks slightly better on and contrasts well with the reddy/orange of the clay courts.

What do you guys think?

  1. He’s back! 😉
I read the other post too, but couldn’t really comment anything other than “I agree”, so it feels like you have been away for a long time 😉
There is a lot to do about these new outfits… I have to say: I love the green. But don’t like the crew neck, no. Polos are much more Fed, I believe. But maybe he wanted a change… You never know. He jokingly says he has no say in it, but I don’t believe that for a second, so maybe he just thought ‘let’s go for something else’…
Wimbledon outfit btw, is not peRFect either in my opinion… Can’t see why the orange in the shirt, is not coming back in the shoes…

    1. Hey yo!

I have had little to blog about, but there is a post going live tomorrow that I think you guys will find interesting 🙂

Maybe the green will grow on me but for now I’m just not digging it.

Only seen a few small pics of Wimbledon, looks ok, don’t mind Orange when it’s a detail colour.

      Jonathan

      1. I’m fine with the orange too, but I don’t get why there is a greyish/silver colour in the shoes, while the detail on the shirt is orange… Doesn’t say ‘Roger’ at all, it should match. That is just how it’s supposed to be… 🙂

    2. Didn’t it occur to you that he is trying to change his image and appeal to a younger generation or feel younger himself. did you notice the hair cut?

      1. Boy, will I miss that blue clay! It was not only a gorgeous color on its own, but it was so easy to follow the action on the television coverage.

      2. Yeah it’s so difficult to pick the ball on red clay, especially if you’re watching via stream and not HD, even worse!

  2. Seems like its more of a commercial thing for nike to make him wear V neck. I don’t know but I haven’t seen federer play in green ever. He z gonna look Imperial anyway. I just hate the fact that nike have removed RF
Logo from the jacket. That sucks.

  3. Jeezum crow! Roger really is turning into a Nadal these days. The collar is gone. The zipper is gone. And now the classy colors are gone too. What next? He will play bare chested? 🙂

He can make it up though if he can pull out one of those stupid clay Masters.

  4. On second thoughts, are Roger outfits hand me downs from Nadal these days??!? I mean, I seriously think that must be the case. Nadal also has a lot of stray Babolats in case Roger needs some. What the cuss?

  5. Perhaps it’s Nikes way of telling Roger he has to do better then they will put him in something nicer? Glad the zipper is gone, like the shoes still prefer him in red and white

    1. Hahaha! It’s like, Roger, your tennis sucks, so should your outfit. Deal with it! 🙂

      1. Incentive based clothing. Not a bad idea!

I’m not a fan of the shoes to be honest, just not the right colours for footwear!

  6. Thanks for the post! I’ve been waiting FOREVER for a post! But then again, Rog hasn’t been playing. I really don’t like it tbh. It is just so Nadalish! Really haven’t liked any outfits this year… Last years Madrid/Rome outfit rocked! No hope in the future, but at least Federer can make this junk look decent.

So Murray is no.2 now… I know you say no for a Fed MC trip, but should he to save his ranking? Remember, he’s defending Madrid on red clay…. And unless he wins Madrid or Rome, he won’t be #2 for French. Then, Fed/Rafa/Djoker could all be in same half and knowing Feds luck, it would probably happen! What are your suggestions for Fed moving forward?

    1. I want to request the ATP to never take away Roger’s 1000 points from Madrid last year. I mean, for him to lose those points, someone must beat him on blue clay. Am I making any sense at all? 🙂

Funny Roger wins on a unique surface and others immediately decided to boycott it.

    2. I think every outfit Roger wore this year was pretty nice. I mean by the colour section, but not the zippers! This green doesn’t look good though. The crew neck green should have been at least a little darker to match the shoes!

    3. I think ranking is irrelevant right now. He just has to stick to his schedule and try and play good tennis. If he plays good, the rankings take care of themselves. No point playing additional tournaments just to claim back the number 2 ranking, not really much different between that and 3 anyway.

See what happens end of the year. Maybe we will be surprised.

      1. Actually, being no.3 going into the french might not be the worst idea. I’m assuming Nadal will do FAR better at Madrid this year, and will likely win both MC and Rome, in which case he’ll enter the French 4th seeded. This means Roger won’t have to deal with him until the final. Not sure if you guys agree, but I just don’t think a win on Nadal at Roland Garros is on the cards for Fed, but taking out Murray or Djokovic is strictly possible, ESPECIALLY Murray. So maybe being 3rd could turn out a blessing in disguise.

      2. Can’t see him beating Nadal at the French. Almost impossible.

Still think he can beat Djoker and Mugray there though.

      3. @John: Nadal will be defending Rome so no point if he just wins it. He will have to win Madrid probably and everything else he won last year to get back to number 5. I see Djokovic getting a win over him somewhere in the clay season so I think it’s pretty likely that Nadal is seeded 5th for RG and that Federer gets him in his draw.

But as you say hopefully the third ranking is a blessing in disguise.

  7. Hey Jonathan. How about Ferrer? I feel sorry for him because he got so close. Haas did great too. It just shows how anything can happen these days. I think that the top 5 spots are going to be up for grabs. I wonder who will step up their game another level? Exciting times. Lets hope Fed hangs in there.

    1. I don’t feel sorry for Ferrer t all. He has no talent. Just runs coast to coast and fetches the ball. Turns everything into a dog fight like Nadal. They will make Michael Vick proud.

    2. Hey Tim,

Yeah I saw some of the final and caught a highlights re run. Nothing to say really Ferrer just doesn’t have the game to beat the top guys. He should have won the final I thought as he had a lot of chances but just couldn’t take them. He never going to win a slam, be lucky to win another 1000.

Haas has been a revelation, 35 and coming up with some great tennis. He’s got a lot of talent even to this very day but he’s such a mental midget. Always back in the early noughties so not a lot has changed. Big win to see of Djokovic though.

I can’t see top 4 changing just yet. Only one who can make an inroad I think is Del Potro. Berdych can linger but he just not got enough to beat the top guys consistently (other than Fed lol)

      Jonathan

      1. Yeah, I just meant that the top 4 or 5 positions are going to be going back and forth, and getting all mixed up. Murray’s playing well enough now to beat Djoker, Rafa as well, and Fed depending on how he comes back. I just hope Fed takes this time to heal his back and get some strategies to beat these other guys. It’s going to be a tall order for one person to dominate again. Tim

      2. Hey,

Yeah could well be. I’m interested to see what happens when Nadal and Murray meet in a slam. Will be a test of Murray’s credentials.

Fed’s been practising on the clay so hopefully the back issue is well and truly behind him for now.

        Jonathan

  8. meh defo not a fan of that… THING. The only green I like is the cincy 2009 polo 😀 can’t find it anywhere though 🙁 let’s hope he plays really good despite the ugly t shirt…

    1. Dude, I own that polo. It’s simply awesome! I could only find one. It’s not exactly green though but looks greenish under yellow light. It doesn’t have the RF logo. I think it’s only later that year that Nike started adding the RF logo. It’s very similar to the French Open 2009 polo (that one is sick!)

The one that I couldn’t ever find at a good price was the US Open 2009 night polo. Here it is: https://i.imgur.com/TSbV61h.jpg

      1. I actually don’t like french 2009… O:) but they started putting the RF logo on beginning 2008 I think. How much do you want for the cincy polo? 😉

      2. I thought they started putting the RF polo only from US Open 2009. Maybe I’m wrong.

You didn’t like the FO2009 polo? That’s blasphemy! 🙂 I can sell you the Cincy polo but you may have to sell your car, your TV, and some other items Hahaha!

      3. Simon, a correction. The RF logo wasn’t put on sale polos until late 2009. All polos that were sold before that time didn’t have the RF logos at all. The Hamburg 2007 polo I have doesn’t have the logo. But starting 2010, all polos have the RF logo.

  9. Sid, I think you are being too tough on Ferrer. He won 7 tournament last year, and is a tough customer. I think a lot of pros would like his record. He makes the most of what he’s got. Can’t say that about a lot of players. Sure his game isn’t pretty, but there’s not too many guys that float around like our Fed. Tim

    1. Exactly my point. If Ferrer, with his severe lack of skills can win seven tournaments, it sort of tells you the state of tennis these days. Hit the gym, get ripped, whack the ball, run and fetch like crazy, hit the gym again (and there are some other things I don’t want to talk about) and you can win.

[but there’s not too many guys that float around like our Fed]
Incorrect. There isn’t anyone who floats around like Roger 🙂

      1. I’ll give you that John. Muhammad Ali, who also stings like a bee 🙂

    2. Ferrer has a good work ethic and clearly works hard but I agree with Sid, he doesn’t have any weapons or much of a game but is just a running machine. Not exactly out of the question that Ferrer could dope either, pretty sure he was at the academy where one of the Doctors implicated in drug charges operated from. Spanish sport is quite protected.

      1. It all smells foul. That’s why, I’ll never have any respect for Nadal’s achievements, even if he overcomes Roger’s slam record.

  10. Hey Jonathan, have missed your posts too! And totally agree with your 3 point summary. Especially #3. He needs a collar, preferably with buttons! What’s next? No sleeves? Somebody stop the madness! Anyway, most important is his play I guess, but I think the clothing helps make a statement. And the polo, (a more formal look) contributes to his classiness and seriousness! Ah well, I can’t wait to see him play! And am looking forward to your next post.

      1. Hey Wendy,

Thanks! No sleeves haha imagine that, puny right arm on show.

Agreed on the polo too, suppose he has won Slams wearing a crew neck before so not the end of the world.

        Jonathan

  11. Disappointed in Nike for this one. Not Federer at all! And unfortunately we are going to have to further endure that horrible Adidas kit on Murray…this time in blue. The guy will never look good. Hopefully Fed can pull it off but right now, it’s too Nadal like to get my approval.

Also regarding the Wimbledon outfit, the Indian Wells shoes would totally fit the orange on the white. Why are the shoes black for it? Ahhh Nike, what are you doing? Hopefully they redeem themselves at the US Open, he always has the best outfits there!

    1. Ah yeah I saw the Mugray one on a catalogue I got through the post. Not a fan.

Pretty sure the shoes won’t be black for Wimbledon, against All England Club rules / etiquette.

      1. [Against All England Club rules]

How did they let Nadal go sleeveless? No rules for that? He also wore pirate pants and not to mention, carried one racquet into the court despite the tradition being that players gear is carried by someone else. So much for tradition. Then the guy says turning clay blue is not preserving tradition. What a hypocrite!

    2. @Alysha Ah I worked out what you meant now I think, they have a black tick not solid black in colour 🙂

      You’re right, should be orange!

  12. This is worse than the henley neck he also wore at Madrid in terms of colorway.

And please don’t make him wear those sleeveless shirts/tanktops or whatever. Only a Pirate-looking Nadal can pull it off.

Other than his plans and gameplay as of the moment, I’m also worried about his outfit at Wimbledon. Make it right Nike! Yikess…

      1. I really liked that Madrid 2010 outfit – everything about it except for the heney neck! The white and black combination looked great on clay, shame it wasn’t a polo.

  13. Just a thought. Just came up to me, did not know which article to post it on:
What if Rafa draw Rosol at Wimby this year again? And he would lose again?
What will the great uncle Toni and Rafa say then? Injury? Again?
If this match would happen, we would all know for sure if Rafa was exaggerating his injury last year.

    1. Doubt Rosol ever plays a match like that ever again but here’s for wishful thinking. I think Nadal will have a say in Wimbledon this year.

    2. Actually, Nadal will draw Rosol at Wimby and he will also find Zeballos in his path at the French Open. Neither of them will be able to beat Nadal though.

Alysha, that’s precisely why he has taken all that time off.

    3. I imagine Nadal would school Rosol if they met again. He played out of his mind that day, was a one off performance.

Dull will be out for blood at Wimbledon I think.

  14. Guess I am the only one around here who likes the colour. I think Roger doesn’t wear green much and this will look great on him! That being said, the style is definitely Nadal-esque. I can picture Nadal better in that than Roger. But I think he’ll pull it off! 🙂

  15. Hey Jonathan and everyone else, this is quite unusual color of green and nothing spectacular. It looks very poor and threadbare I hope that Roger game will not be like outfit?! GO ROGER!

      1. If he runs an extra country mile every match, there is no reason why we won’t see some high level play 🙂

    1. Good one! Threadbare will turn into a damp paper towel right after the ten minute warm up 🙂

Why Roger? Why Nike? Why did you do it?

      1. Haha yeah, hopefully they bring out some retro shirts from past tournaments if that happens. Madrid 2009 would be a good one. Finger Wag 1.0 shirt.

  16. Hum… I actually like it! Maybe because green is my favorite color. Much better than the pink outfit from Australia…

I also want to ask everyone in this blog to keep their fingers crossed so that Fed comes to play in Estoril before Madrid… It could be a good workout; Delpo and Stan are in the mix and could possibly be my last chance to see him play live!

    Best,
    Vasco

    1. Hey Vasco,

If he loses early in Madrid then he could play Estoril I think… not impossible.

Are there any other tournaments in Portugal? He said he wants to play some he’s never played before when he’s close to retiring…

      Jonathan

      1. Estoril is the week before Madrid, maybe he could use it like a tune up event, I don’t know. There aren’t any noteworthy events here… . In the Algarve, sometimes, they have a few former champions events (saw Stefan Edberg there once) but besides Estoril the tennis landscape is pretty grim around these parts

        Best,
        Vasco

  17. New Rule: You can’t dress like the greatest clay courter of all time and not act like one.

To truly do justice to that rip off of a Nadal outfit, Roger must win a clay title this season. To do that, he must grunt, tug his shorts at least once per game, take 30 seconds between points, use a Babolat (100 sq in minimum), clear the net by at least six feet on his ground strokes, call a pre-match press conference and talk about his knees (his back I guess), give the umpire a lecture in Swiss German, snarl, pump his fists, yell “Vamos!” no less than thrice a set, take an injury time out, ask the ball boy or girl to carry at least four towels, and gives a solid Zidane style head bump on a changeover involving Berdych etc.

You get the idea, right? 🙂

    1. Yeah, that head bump from Zidane was something else… if only roger was balding, he could aim better;)

      1. As big a target as Berdych represents, Roger can easily find the sweet spot and save his hair 🙂

    2. “gives a solid Zidane style head bump on a changeover involving Berdych” hahah how funny would that be. Even the non-Federer fans would enjoy that one.

      1. I’ll celebrate that day as my birthday 🙂 But really, we Roger fans need some form of closure on this who Berd Flu thing, right?

    3. Maybe Roger should also consider “growing” his muscle. That left arm needs a lot of work. haha! Nah, I’m just playing 😀

    1. To be honest I’m not gonna bother reading it, nothing new there I can just tell from the title. Almost Bleacher Report like. Not a fan of Tennis.com although Tignor is alright.

      Their new site also sucks.

  18. i like green color! Its my favorite color.
I wait too much for see Roger using green again.
But is ugly, i dont like green color style Nadal.
too much Nadal. I dont like.
    Nike is crazy or what?
And for the RG the Outfit Nadal use is Red, red style Roger.
Really i dont know what they pretend.

    Like de hat, nothing more.

  19. I really like roger in blue…Vintage Roger…Dont think I have ever seen him in green..Not like this..more nadal style…

    1. Yup, you’re right. But it was more white with some green adds, just like Wimbledon 2011.

As I’m seeing Rome’s semi, it suits Federer well, I think 🙂 It’s nice to see a change. Not a big fan of the shoes, though.
