Federer to face Monfils in French Open Quarters

So Monfils scraped through to a quarter final meeting with Federer. After Gael wasted a couple of match points I actually thought Ferrer was going to pull the match out of the bag.

Especially seen as though Monfils was looking increasingly tired after a succession of pulsating rallies. However, he totally broke down in his final service game missing some regulation forehands to hand Monfils the win.

So a prediction for tomorrow?

I see Roger coming through in straight sets here. Ok you can argue Monfils is a talented player with a home crowd cheering him on, but I don't think he can get the job done.

Why? 3 reasons really – the fact he's played a 5 setter today will have undoubtedly taken it out of him. Secondly, he never seems to be able to play the big points all that well. And thirdly, I see Roger returning too well on the Monfils serve.

Monfils has power on both wings, but from what I've seen he only seems able to use it in fits and spurts. He's like a boxer who can only throw punches for 90 seconds of every round. If he plays passive against Federer he's gonna get the total run around, sliding 3ft behind the baseline squash shotting forehands for Roger to drop shot leaving him no chance.

My prediction: Federer 7-5 6-4 6-2.

Allez les Suisse!

Huge fan of Roger Federer. I watch all his matches from Grand Slam level right down to ATP 250. When I'm not watching or writing about tennis I play regularly myself and have a keen interest in tactics, equipment and technicalties of the sport.
