Federer mauls Mannarino 6-2 6-3

Like the match itself (56 minutes), this will be a very short match review. There's nothing really to analyse other than the gulf in class was massive. The writing was on the wall after the pair met at Wimbledon earlier in the year and that was a very one sided affair.

Roger cruised the first set 6-2, and he never really had to get out of first gear. His first serve was functioning very well, but it wasn't really tested as Mannarino isn't a great returner, in fact I struggle to see what his game is about. His forehand is such a weak shot that it's easy to get on top of, you can imagine a 65 year old Federer still having too much guile for him.

Second set was the same story, Roger broke early, had match point at 5-2, missed it, but comfortably served it out to take the set and the match 6-3.

I thought it was a good match for me, said Federer. I think Mannarino didn't play the best match, but for me it was a good way to find my way into the tournament.

Predictions vs. Gasquet

Roger will now face Gasquet after he beat South African Kevin Anderson, I think this will be an interesting match, whilst the French players never play well at Roland Garros, they seem to do ok at the lesser tournaments on home soil. Gasquet is a full of flare and has a great 1 handed backhand but I think Roger brings too much to the party here and should see him off.

He didn't play for a while, but I expect Gasquet to be totally fit, otherwise he wouldn't be back in competition. It would have been easy for him just to go off on holidays and prepare for next year. So if he's here, it means he can play

Prediction: Federer 7-5 6-4

Huge fan of Roger Federer. I watch all his matches from Grand Slam level right down to ATP 250. When I'm not watching or writing about tennis I play regularly myself and have a keen interest in tactics, equipment and technicalties of the sport.
