Hard to describe this match other than saying it was just brilliance from Roger from start to finish. After the WTA delaying proceedings by almost an hour Roger came out and totally blew Seppi off the court.
The first set was over in a flash and Seppi did well not to get bagelled, Roger clearly wanted to get the match over quickly and employed the tactic of all out aggression.
He was returning Seppi’s second serves a metre and a half inside the baseline and consequently Seppi was only able to win 3 of 10 points behind it.
Roger’s serve was once again clinical and he looked to get to the net at any given opportunity, which worked a treat as he won 11 of 14 points there throughout the match.
It was really just ruthless from Roger as he converted four of his eight break point opportunities, and hit 81 per cent of his first serves to win through 6-1 6-2 in just 54 minutes.
Like I say this was just a tennis lesson from Fed and it’s hard to see what Seppi could have done differently. When he’s in these kind of moods then there really is no stopping him. The forehand was firing and it was almost as if he had the ball on a string. Even though the crowd were cheering their home favourite on, it was almost as if they just had to applaud what they were seeing. Awesome stuff.
I was happy with everything,” stated Federer. “I knew Seppi being a favourite for the fans here was going to be a tough match. I was able to really take it to him right from the start, being aggressive, and it all played out. It’s a nice win on clay for me.
Well it’s the semi final we all expected and I’m definitely excited to see these 2 play for the first time since the heartache of the US Open 5 set loss.
Roger has been on top form since that loss and Djokovic’s level looks to have dropped ever so slightly. Although he still won in Australia and defended his title in Miami so I can’t say he’s playing badly.
With these two I think the overall H2H pretty much goes outta the window and it’s all about on the day, Djokovic has had the better run of it lately, but how can we forget last years French Open semi final?
I think it will be close, a few hairy moments for sure but I’m backing Roger here. If he can play anything like he did against Seppi then he has a great chance, after all he has all the weapons and variety to cause Djokovic problems.
I’m glad it’s an evening session again as I think this will favour Roger, especially because it gives him enough time to rest. Because Rogers a Grand Slam Man (hit play below) I’m going to predict straight sets, 6-4 7-6.
