Federer defeats Lopez in Dubai

A very slick performance from Roger today against Feliciano Lopez, the Spaniard can be tricky because he serves big but Fed came through 7-5 6-3 in just under 90 minutes.

Many fans were worried about Roger's first serve percentage in yesterdays match against Llodra but he turned that on it's head today firing down 12 aces, keeping 79 per cent of his 1st serves in play and winning 92 per cent of points behind it.

The first set was close, with Lopez particularly impressive behind his second serve. Federer had some break point chances at 5-4 but failed to convert, at 6-5 though he finally converted with a clever return to take the set.

The second set was similar, Lopez served well and Federer was pretty much cruising behind his serve. I was happy to see Fed start returning better in the second set as he picked up more of a read on the Lopez serve. I think the match would have been over much quicker if Lopez wasn't a leftie. As Roger said in his interview, all the break points are played behind Lopez's favourite serve – the swinger outwide.

At 4-3 Federer, Lopez totally broke down – he missed all first serves and made 2 bad errors to donate Roger a break, Fed served it out with ease, including a great rally to start the game that featured a no look forehand from Fed whilst retrieving a lob.

I just tried to focus on my serve, made sure from that end I wasn't doing any stupid stuff, and at the end I got a bit of a read on his serve,” said Federer. “At the end of the set, [I] had some chances and eventually was able to come through, even though I had chances at 5-4 and I think four set points.

Predictions vs. Youhzny

Next up for Federer is Mikhail Youzhny, Roger leads the H2H 11-0 and I see him making it 12-0 easily. Youzhny is a perfect matchup for Federer, he's basically like a lesser version of himself. He has a sweet backhand, but lacks the edge to topple someone like Roger.

I think there will be some great rallies and shot making from both men with Federer coming through in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
