Federer cruises past Bogomolov; Routines Tomic En Route to Quarter Finals

Yo Yo Yo! 2 posts combined into one here as I didn't have chance to talk about the Bogomolov match from late last night/early this morning before Roger routined Tomic to make the Quarter finals. I've so far enjoyed Cincy, I don't particularly like the stadium but the courts play fast and Fed always seems to play well there so it's definitely good to watch on TV and to say we've been on grass for like 6 weeks he has so far transitioned pretty well which is good to see. He's been moving well too which bodes well for the rest of the year. Anyway into the two matches so far…

Federer Cruises Past Bogomolov 6-3 6-2

Routine start for Roger against Russian Alex Bogomolov Junior. These two have only played each other once before and that was at the 2004 Australian Open that featured a 3rd set bagel for Bogomolov. From that alone I figured it would be a good match for Roger to ease himself into the hard courts and I wasn't disappointed.

I wouldn't call it JesusFed but he did serve very well and only faced one break point right in the final game of the match when he served it out. A perfect start really when you consider the last time Fed set foot on a hard court was way back in March when he lost to Roddick in Miami.

Other than that there's not too much to say, Roger is better in all departments and he likes the courts here in Cincinnati so there was only ever going to be one winner.

I'm very happy. It was a quick match, a good one for me, said Federer. I served well. I was able to play some good points on the offensive, and overall I'm very pleased because I don't know Bogomolov that well. I've only played him once, and that was so long time ago I hardly remember. I didn't know what to expect, to be honest. Obviously the turnaround from grass to hard court might not be an easy one this year. The ball definitely bounces so much higher here and plays much faster than Wimbledon, so it just takes some getting used to. I'm happy I was able to find a way.

Federer Routines Tomic 6-2 6-4

If you thought it wasn't going to get much easier after the Bogomolov match you'd be wrong as Fed totally routined Tomic in straight sets and looked pretty impressive. Not as clinical on serve as he was against the Russian but his forehand was on top form and his backhand pretty solid.

As usual of late Fed got off to a good start as he broke Tomic in the first game, to be honest I thought Tomic would be up for a match like this (albeit come up short) but his opening game was very sloppy really and he handed over the break without even really trying to prevent it. That my friends, is a very bad idea!

The gifted break was a dream start to be honest and even though Roger wasn't looking totally convincing himself on serve he held easily enough backed up with some smart play to lead 3-1.

At 4-2 he got the double break and served it out easily to take it 6-2, by this point the Fed's forehand was starting to get into that groove we all know and love, finding the spots, zipping off the court and allowing him to dictate play as and when he chose.

The second set was more of the same, Roger had deuce in Tomic's opening service game but the Aussie held and to be fair he did start serving a little better once he got into a rhythm. At 3-3 Tomic got to deuce on the Fed serve but a great volley from Fed allowed him to hold and then at 4-4 he broke with some great play both to setup his first BP and then eventually take his second after Tomic got back to deuce. He then served it out firing down an ace on match point. Standard.

Quick Thoughts

I'm not a fan of Tomic/Bratomic/Tomug and don't really enjoy his playing style anyway but today I was even more disappointed with his game, it was pretty crap to be honest. Lethargic, total pushing and just generally like he wasn't even interested in the match.

From Fed's perspective it was a cruise match, he had plenty in the tank and didn't really need to push himself or get out his comfort zone. Once his forehand clicked it was all over for Tomic and he made too many errors and didn't play attacking enough.

Predictions vs. Fish

Next up for Roger is Mardy Fish and this will no doubt be much trickier than his first two matches. I've not seen Fish play this tournament but by all accounts he's been playing well so far and he beat Radek Stepanek today in straight sets. I watched most of his matches at Wimbledon which was his first tournament back after his heart problem and he looked like he was finding a little bit of form.

Fish can be dangerous but to be honest I see Roger winning this one fairly comfortably. They've met before in Cincy in the 2010 final and that's when Fish was really playing at his peak level yet he still didn't get the job done against Roger losing in 3 sets. So I doubt he can pull off the win tomorrow and opt for Fed 7-6 6-4.

I think Fed will make the final now and most likely face Djoker, which would be interesting after he won the Rogers Cup last week. I think maybe Djoker would be slight favourite but there's matches for both players to play before we can think about that.

Huge fan of Roger Federer. I watch all his matches from Grand Slam level right down to ATP 250. When I'm not watching or writing about tennis I play regularly myself and have a keen interest in tactics, equipment and technicalties of the sport.

    1. Like I said in my post, 2010 was when Fish was getting his best results of his career, think he beat Murray en route to the Cincy Final yet he still couldn’t beat Fed in the final. When Fed was coming off a QF final defeat at Wimbledon. I can’t see Fish winning, he’d have to play unbelievable and Fed would have to play a shocker.

      1. Fed got back into form in Toronto (where he beat Berdych and Djokovic). He was playing very well in Cincinnati that year and Fish nearly beat him. All I’m saying is don’t underestimate Mardy – he did take Fed to 3 in the World Tour Finals last year in the round robin.

  1. Hello Jonathan, I agree with everything you say / wrote and I especially liked expression “JesusFed”! Cool! 🙂
I always read your predictions which are very encouraging for all who love Roger! Thank You, Best Regards!

  2. What an art, truly an art. I really enjoy watching Fed play. But why you said that if they meet in the final, Djoker would be slight favourite? Contrary to Nole, Roger had rest longer after the olympic, don’t you think? Thanks for the blog, Jonathan. Looking forward for the next post.

    1. I’m just basing it on hard court form, Djoker is reigning US Open champion and he just took down Toronto. I think it’s his best surface too so I still give him the edge.

  3. Yeah, Fish won’t be a big problem for Roger, I think. Straight Sets for sure! My prediction: 6-3 6-4
When I took a look at the schedule, I was at first irritated when I I saw Roger’s name on the top but then I had to put a smile on my face, shaked my head and thought: What a genius… Somehow I still can’t believe it! 🙂
    Go Roger!!

  4. Fed’s only seed to the final is Fish! By the way, what do you think of Raonic? You see him as a top-3 player in the up-coming years?

  5. In those 2 matches, his forehand was like a machine. He made his swings without any doubt. His finesse drop shots was with him, too.Roger showed that he is the master of the fast courts.

For the tournament, I don’t see a serious obstacle on his way to the final. I believe that Roger will beat Djokovic in 3 sets.

    1. Hey Deniz,

Yeah his forehand has been dialed in this tournament so far. Getting serious zip off these fast courts. All his other shots have been out the top drawer too.

Hope you’re right on the win, I’ll be content with him keeping 1 seed for US open but another 1000 trophy wouldn’t go amiss.

  6. I too think today’s match with Fish could be tricky but favour Federer to win this match. The next real threat could be Raonic, Federer always struggled against by losing the first set in all his previous meetings. Raonic is increasingly becoming dangerous, and I want to see him in the other half of US draw so that other top 3,4 players would be tested too. If Roger could manage to reach final, it would be an interesting final, most likely against Djoker.

  7. I don’t know guys, I’m getting a bad feeling about this. Fish seems to be in some sort of zone. His three wins have been rather easy. We’ll see how Roger likes his Sushi 🙂

      1. No shame…. I said I was confident that Federer would have a slugfest with Raonic in the Semis… Ha! That went as planned 😛

      2. At least your prediction of 7-5 6-3 was as good as the actual 6-3 7-6 🙂
Del Po-Djoker, man! That’s going to be tasty!

    1. Haha come on Sid, I told you Fish couldn’t beat Fed in 2010 when he was playing awesome on the hardcourts, he won Atlanta then beat Murray + Roddick before losing to Fed in the final. He never gonna get it done in 2012 against the Wimbledon champ.
