Thoughts on the Draw

First up is either the big hitting Russian Karen Khachanov or Diego Schwartzman. Roger played Khachnaov in Halle where he showed he can be dangerous but he's not the most consistent of players at the moment. I think he may struggle with Schwartzman who's in decent form himself although I'd probably just give Khachanov the edge in three sets. I think that will suit Federer too as Schwartzman is arguably a tougher opponent as he'll make a lot of shots thanks to his speed around the court.

Round 3 is seeded against Sock who's another player in patchy form. He made the Semi Finals in Washington but then lost to Ferrer in Montreal. On his day his forehand can be a handful but there's too many areas Fed can exploit should they meet.

The Quarters has Berdych and Dimitrov as the likely opposition. Berdych withdrew from Montreal with a rib injury so I'm not sure what to expect from him and Dimitrov is impossible to predict. He had an easy draw at the Coupe Rogers but lost to Haase so whilst he excels at getting on ATP Hot Shot of the Day when it comes to winning matches he's not putting it together at all. He did make the semi finals last year though so is probably the favourite to come through.

Semis is then Sascha Zverev who's been in top form on the hard courts and plays his semi final today in Montreal. Raonic is the other highest seed but he has a wrist problem so it's up in the air whether he will play or not.

The final, of course, has Nadal as the top seed but he has a tricky path including Richard Gasquet, Gilles Muller, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Kei Nishikori and Dominic Thiem all potential opponents. So it's a long way away for both guys but Roger has the slightly easier path on paper.

Based on the draws and ranking permutations it could be an interesting week with Andy Murray set to lose his Number 1 ranking to either Fed or Rafa. Rafa is slightly in the driving seat for now. But if Fed were to win the Coupe Rogers he would get back World No. 1 with an equal or better finish than the Spaniard in Cincy.

Anyway, let me know your thoughts on the draw. Should Fed play Cincy if he wins Montreal?

Jonathan

Huge fan of Roger Federer - I'll pretty much try and watch all his matches from Grand Slam level right down to ATP 250. When I'm not watching or tweeting about tennis I play regularly myself and use this blog to share my thoughts on Fed and tennis in general.

    1. Seems weird not to have Murray, Nole or Stan in the draw! Hopefully Roger will play really good like he always does in Cincinnati

  1. Driving to Cincinnati today, but unlikely catch Roger’s match as coming back on Monday.

I assumed he likely won’t play in Montreal and be here is first weekend..🤔😷

Nothing much to say on draw… As you said tricky on top spot this week, but Hopefully Rogers gets back top spot after US open (with substantial lead) to get Year End top spot

  2. Cincy!! my favorite fast court is here…!!!

hahaha.. the draw is out and we are in semis of montreal… Love the draw.. Funny feeling kinda sad because I dont see the name of Djoko, murray and stan.. well they give spiciness to the tournament.. not gonna complain though.. 🙂

Looking forward to Berdych/Fed and sacha Fed..

      1. Wah! really?? haha.. after fed told that he will not play in the 2nd hal of the season I stop watching tennis and go back last January… 🙂
        Thanks for the info.. 🙂

  3. I might sound very greedy but below are the few boxes left to be ticked in Roger’s already impressive resume
    1) Winning Canada masters in Montreal (I put this as first because he is very close to achieving it this week)
    2) Sweeping summer hard court masters in Canada and Cincinati and winning US Open (If Nadal who do not have great record in hard courts did that, why not Federer, one of the best hard court players ever. I say one of the best as I have a lot of respect for Novak )
    3) Beating Rafa in French Open (for this to happen, he has to play there😊)
    4) Winning the Monte Carlo and Rome Masters to accomplish the Career Golden Masters (at this moment he doesn’t seem to be bothered about these two clay masters)
    5) Winning Olympic Gold in Singles (which we can say out of his reach considering his age but he never rejected the prospect of playing in Tokyo Olympics)

Jonathan I want to hear your opinion ☺️

      1. Ha ha I needed to google to understand the meaning of averice ☺️☺️☺️☺️but yeah may be you are right. At the same time I am very much content with his grandslam and masters 1000 career especially after the results this year.

      2. Yeah I guess fans like seeing him win and win and win. I just like watching him play tennis these days, although helps if he does win so you get to see more of it 😋

      3. I do not see reply button on the latest comment on this thread. Hence putting reply here. During the last few days I am almost sacrificing atleast 2 hours of my sleep (as the matches happen during my night) to watch the maestro play as it give me lot of energy and joy watching him play. Last few matches he played, he is the firm favorite to win but still as these are his twilight years on tour, don’t want to miss any matches he play when possible.

  4. On paper should be pretty good route to final but any of these opponents are potential banana peel. Assuming if he wins Montreal, I think Roger will continue on to Cincy. No 1 spot is on the line, am sure everyone will be eager to see who comes out on top. Let’s hope this attempt don’t stretch Roger too much, need him to be in top form for USO. Go for no 20 Roger!!!!

  5. I think Fed seems in very cheeky form. His speed of reaction was more than impressive today. So – no fatigue at the moment. Go for it Roger, enjoy!

  6. So wild to have a draw post before we’re even done withthe previous tourney. As others have said, presumably he’ll get a Tues/Weds start, so he’ll have some time to recoup. A little. Good practice, I suppose, for USO. Agree that while the draw looks doable, he needs to beplaying reasonably well to beat these opponents; can’t be coasting. Not sure who might take out Nadal on the other side either… Gasquet who was finally in decent form last week? Kyrgios? Seems funny to be wishing that a 20- year old, in the form of Zverev, had ended up in the other half. Still, since he’s made the final this week, there’s some thought that whatever he does in Cincy is gravy (that #1 possibility, though….) I guess what I hope for is that whatever happens, it’s the best possible preparation for him, at this time, for USO.

  7. Happy Birthday, Sue!
Many happy returns, know should Roger win the trophy today it would complete your celebration…..Go Roger!

  8. This Christopher Eubanks character has done very well for himself getting through qualifying – I know Tipsarevich hasn’t been fully healthy, but still, Eubanks is still at uni… and then he gets Gael Monfils in the first round!
