Happy New Year to all those who read the blog! The off season is officially over now the Mubadala Tennis Championships have started in Abu Dhabi and earlier today the Brisbane International Draw came out. Thoughts on the Draw

Federer 1000 Wins Brisbane

Always tough to predict anything in the first tournament back as all players are going to be somewhat rusty after 3/4 weeks off. If Federer's IPTL performances are anything to go by then even winning 1 match would be an achievement πŸ˜† but I think he'll do slightly better than that. Post IPTL he's been training in Dubai with Ljubicic & Luthi along with various ATP Pro's like Pouille and Dolgopolov.

In terms of the draw first up is either a qualifier or Ben Mitchell. Mitchell is yet to play a match on the ATP tour from what I can tell and the only reason I've heard of him is because he gave James Duckworth a walkover in their scheduled Australian Open men’s wildcard playoff final so he could be in Brisbane for the birth of his daughter. On a completely non tennis note do you think he made the right choice? It's quite interesting how times have changed – 30 years ago it was almost unheard of for a professional sportsmen to forfeit or not play in a game to be at the birth of their child, now it's almost the reverse. Anyway whether Mitchell or the qualifier come through it should be a relatively easy start for Fed.

Into the Quarters and all 4 players in the section could come through. Simon is the 5th seed and usually plays pretty well on this surface so I guess he's the favourite. Dimitrov has never done well in Australia retiring twice in Sydney over the last couple of years so who knows what to expect from him. Maybe Steve Johnson has a good chance to come through that section and meet Roger.

The semi finals are then seeded to be against Marin Cilic but there are a few banana skins in his section including Thiem and Chung who can give him a hard time. Three Aussies are also in there – Groth, JP Smith and Duckworth. In front of a homecrowd they could raise their level. I'll pick Cilic to come through as he's been in Australia practising over the New Year.

Into the final and Nishikori or Raonic are the likely candidates. Raonic was last years beaten finalist at the hands of Fed but he then spent most of 2015 on the sidelines. Kei can play well on all surfaces but he's not immune to losing early so I think maybe Goffin or Tomic can come through this section to make the final.

Like I said above making predictions is never easy especially at the start of the season where every player is an unknown – we don't know who's carrying a niggle, who opted for mince pies over court time or who has really pushed themselves to try get 2016 off to a great start. Looking at the draw I think Fed should be looking to make the final though and give himself a shot of defending the title. 1 match at a time of course and I'm guessing play will get underway for Federer on Wednesday. Allez!

Let me know what you think of the draw in the comments.

First Comment Winner for 2015

Color13 Comment Winner

The first comment winner for 2015 is Alex who defended her title comfortably with 20 first comments in the year. Those wins are spread across 127 posts, which is a win rate of 15%. Impressive numbers! Second place was Nambi with 17 comments and Emerson in third with 12. Thanks to all those who commented throughout the year too, it makes the blog what it is really so cheers πŸ™‚

For those who don't know what I'm on about, I keep a record of every first comment left on any blog post posted on peRFect Tennis. They are totted up in a spreadsheet throughout the year to keep a running total on the comment leaderboard page. I'll be doing the same again in 2016 too πŸ™‚

This year I've decided to give away 1 T-shirt from to the Top 3. If you are reading this guys – please pick one from Color13 (who by the way have just relaunched their website with new ladies designs and t-shirt configuration tool do check it out) and let me know which you want and I'll get them sorted for you.

PS. Sue if you want one, now is the time because I think Nambi lives in Canada, in which case I could get them both shipped in one box, and you could sort it out to be shipped to you domestically which I imagine will be a nominal cost. Then you'd only have the expense of the t-shirt not the shipping. That's of course a.) if you want one, and b.) both you and Nambi are open to that idea. If not ignore!

Huge fan of Roger Federer. I watch all his matches from Grand Slam level right down to ATP 250. When I'm not watching or writing about tennis I play regularly myself and have a keen interest in tactics, equipment and technicalties of the sport.

Probably Jonathan kindly replying to each of our raves. Oh, he’s already got tons of T-shirts anyway.

    1. Happy New Year Wanda.

I could probably work it out if I exported the database and counted but I can’t be bothered πŸ˜† I think it will be pretty close between a few commenters and I’m surely up there too πŸ˜‰

And that’s the first news article on new year day and what a surprise!..Thank you…I am open for Jonathan’s idea..

    1. Thanks Nambi, I believe you live in Ontario? The postage would be about $15 or so. I’m going to reluctantly pass this time. Thanks anyway, you lucky dog.

      1. Hey Sue, a good news. Color 13 makes Roger T-shirts in lady’s version as well – Jonathan twitted.

      1. Btw Nambi there will be about $15CA duty on the shirt to Canada unfortunately as I’ve just worked it out now. So up to you if you want to go ahead.

Emerson you will also need to pay Q138.48 customs fee to receive it. So I’ll leave it up to you guys.

Alex – you are import duty free because you are in France πŸ™‚

  4. Hey,Happy new year everyone !
hope all the people on the blog have a wonderful 2016 and this blog prospers in 2016 with Fed winning many titles.
Well,I don’t know why but I don’t have good vibes for this particular tournament,Fed’s got a pretty decent draw but still I am not confident. It will be exciting to see what happens.

  5. It would certainly be nice to start the season off with a win – start as you mean to go on. I’m just happy he’ll be back on the court and I can get my Fedfix very soon. Happy New Year to you all, and Go Feds!

  6. Happy New Year everyone.
Good to know tennis starts in a couple of days. I hope Roger has got his mojo bck because the IPTL was a disaster.
Sincerely hoping this year we get a grand slam , somehow, anyhow. I would just love to stir the New Year tennis wishpot and tip Federer to win the Australian Open πŸ™‚
    Enjoy your evening Fans!!

    1. Well it was the slam he won second last, so maybe odds wise it’s not unthinkable. But can it reward his style of play enough to beat some of the solid baseliners? You can back him to take out Murray but Djoker and Nadal on plexicushion? Tough to do.

  7. Happy new year everyone! Thanks Jonathan for all your blog posts. I don’t comment much but I love reading your blog and the comments. I’m hoping for a great year from Roger. I’d like to see him start the year with another title.

  8. Happy new year all! I am hoping for at least 2/3 wins as prep for Oz Open! No expectations other than for Rog to get some match rhythm! Bonus if he defends title!

  9. Happy New Year! A good Fed year, I hope. It’s great fun to read all analysts scratching their heads, wondering what Fed will come up with this year. It’s amazing to see year after year that he just won’t go away. Instead he reinvents himself over and over again. Let’s hope it will result in a new major title. A good start in Brisbane would be nice.

  10. Happy New Year everyone! Hoping for a drama-free first tournament in the year and a good warm-up for AO for our Fed. I follow Kei on social media and he’s been training very hard. I tip him to meet Fed in the final.

  11. I saw some of the Stan Raonic match today. Raonic in 2. I know it was an exho but he did look like he had been working hard on his game. He still has Ljubicic’s old coach with him. Wonder if Fed stole Ljub. Could be a good match between him and Nishikori if that transpires.
Hope our Roger serves better than IPTL…lol.
Can’t wait for the start of the season!

  12. Hello all and happy new year. Wow 2016 already man the years are going so quick. I always seem to bump into one of my friends and every time I see him its always seems to bexXmas .lol. my god I must be getting old.
Anyway hopefully Roger will have a good season. I also hope Roger can get to the final and defend his title. It will be a interesting year with Roger missing nearly all of the clay tournaments and then having the Olympics. I hope that the British commentators don’t go on about Roger needs to win the Gold in singles to be considered a bs GOAT or to hear Murray is the best ever because of his win!! Lol.
Anyway fingers crossed and one match at a time. I still believe in Roger.

  13. Happy New Year To all looking forward to seeing some good tennis in 2016 from Roger lets hope he starts with holding on to his Brisbane crown.

  14. Happy New Year, Fedmirers…..hope Fed has a good year and stays healthy. Same for all of us, really! Wouldn’t mind swapping all six 2015 titles for 1 GS, though!

  15. Lool, @ Sumi you are so on point. I just want the big ones this year . It will be great if he just lost other titles and wins all grand slams this year .
Hehehe, we Fed fans just don’t stop. I love it!!!

  16. Happy new year ? and thanks Jonathan ?? The Australian events are not the most convenient ones for me to watch but I’ll try to catch some before class ??
I just wish Roger is not very rusty and defends his title to lauch an amazing season I hope!

    1. Any qualifier who’s already played himself into form over a couple of matches could pose some problems for someone who’s rusty, of course. But fingers crossed!

Happy New Year, everyone. I did one of my regular refreshes of the page I was last on on this site, and didn’t realise that Jon had made a new post!

    2. Yeah Gulbis out long ago. Although Nishioka is a good up and comer. Pouille took him out next round, I think Pouille could be a good one for the future…

    1. That’s the RF970, right?
Or he could have injured his doubles partner as well!!!
(or anyone in the vicinity, given the length of the… thing)

      Happy 2016, by the way!

  17. Happy New Year everyone!! Been missing tennis and Roger a lot. Brisbane draw looks decent with a couple of potential slipper slopes. I hope he can retain his title. Let’s go Roger!!!

I am looking forward to a great year for all of us. Winning or losing Fedfans will be cheering. Back together again!

  19. Not too hot in Brizbin. Very humid, though. Hoping for day matches so it’s a reasonable time for me.
Waiting until Thursday to get your feet wet? I think I’d rather start sooner.

I think this year a lot of players will start to fade and younger ones will be making their mark. Nadal could be on the move again.

      1. Not around my area, but lots of tornado warnings, and there was one that touched down about 30 miles from where I am. Was supposed to go through my county, but missed it. Not to mention I still went and played tennis (indoors) that night. πŸ™‚

  20. I have just been reading that apparently Federeraasked to play on Thursday night as on Wednesday he stopped short his practice after half an hour. And was comforting his arm. Also the doctor was called. This if true could be a early blow on his defense of the title. But let’s see what happens tomorrow.
I personally hope that its more media propaganda hype as earlier in the week Shreikapova and Halep pulled out of the tournament due to injuries.
Fingers crossed that Federer can recover.
Ps.. Federer should of not gone for the smash with that over sized raquet on kids day. Please can someone give that enormous tennis raquet back to Agassi! !! Lol

    1. Well, I’m afraid when I saw he wasn’t down to play until Thursday my immediate reaction was a flashback to Gstaad 2013, hence the double question marks. Hope he’ll be all right – he was taking painkillers for it last autumn, wasn’t he? Was it in the WTF final?

  21. Oh dear, Serajul. While I was reading your comment, that’s what crossed my mind….it was the giant racquet.
Hope it’s not true, seems his arm was an issue last fall.

  22. Yep. Hopefully some painkillers and a bit of restcan ssolve the problem. Can somebody please give federer some paracetamols before the “parrots-eatem-all” . SSorry for the poor joke. Lol . I’ll stop while I am ahead.
    Come on Roger.

  23. A bit late, but still happy new year all. Wow Alex, you go girl. 20 first comments?? Wow, I think I had 2 or maybe 3. Congrats girl and also to the others.

Roger playing tomorrow. Hope there is no injury scare….. come on Goat, this has to be and will be our year πŸ™‚

  24. Yes Jonathan, I meant Federer winning all four slams and losing early in other tourneys. If there is a way to seal this deal with the tennis gods I will πŸ™‚

    1. Meh, what are predictions worth? πŸ˜‰

Not sure anyone predicted he’d make to consecutive GS finals this year, not sure anyone predicted Wawrinka would win French, etc etc.

Take it the way it comes πŸ™‚
