Australian Open 2012 – 1st Week Highlights

The first week off this years Australian Open has come to an end so I thought I'd look at my highlights of the tournament so far:

Why break 1 racket when you can break 4?

The weirdest racket breaking session I've ever seen! Bagdhatis doesn't just break 1, but 4 rackets. It's still unclear whether he broke them outta frustration, or it was something about a new racket deal falling through. Either way it was entertaining, and actually made him play better as he took the next set despite losing the match in 4.

Nalbandian gets the worst call of the tournament

Picture the scene, its 8-8 all in the fifth set, you have break point. A serve gets called out, and is overuled by the Chair Umpire, the crowd gasp, nobody is sure what happened. You look at the umpire, look at the line – figure out what's happened and say you want to challenge. But oh wait – he won't let you because you took too long. You end up losing the match. Ouch!

Berdych shows his lack of class…again

Another classless move from well know douchebag Tomas Berdych – he took offense when Alamgro went direct at him when hitting a passing shot on the run. It hit Berdych on the arm, I know, painful! So what did Berdych do? Refused to shake his hand when he won the match because he was that incensed. My advice would be stop taking things personally, and concentrate on filling up your almost empty trophy cabinet rather than racking up notches on everyone's most hated tennis player wall chart.

The ultimate backhand smash

Finally, a 1st week highlight that is an actual real life points from a real life match. Check this out for backhand smash – nobody else can execute this shot.

Video removed 🙁

What have your highlights been? Let me know, and seen as though I've not watched every match let me know if I've missed any blinders!

Huge fan of Roger Federer. I watch all his matches from Grand Slam level right down to ATP 250. When I'm not watching or writing about tennis I play regularly myself and have a keen interest in tactics, equipment and technicalties of the sport.

    1. Hi Christine,

Thanks, guess I had no real way of knowing you saw the old one as I think this is your first comment. But I’m glad you like it!

Hopefully the week 2 highlight is a single video of Fed holding the trophy.
